There is a new movie coming out in just a few weeks called “The Golden Compass”. It is receiving a lot of press and scrutiny from the media and especially Christians. The author, Phillip Pullman is an outspoken atheist and in 2003 told “The Sydney Morning Herald”, “My books are about killing God.”
We want to to make you aware of this book and the intentions of what conservative British columnist Peter Hitchens labeled Pullman “the most dangerous author in Britain and described him as “the writer as the atheists would have been praying for, if atheist prayed.”
What does this mean for us Christians?
-Nothing. The devil is attacking us on every front already.
-We should not be afraid of this movie. Great conversations can be had if we are well informed about what he is talking about in his books. We can talk with our children about how we the devil works in ways to make sin look good and attractive (like in a movie or popular book). 2 Timothy 4:2 (NIV), Preach the Word; be prepared in season and out of season; correct, rebuke and encourage—with great patience and careful instruction.
Please checkout these websites for yourself and make a well informed opinion of Pullman and his books so you can tell your friends and family.
I got a few Amazon gift certificates and a little extra cash so I bought some new books and music and thought I would share with everyone.
Books- The Irresistible Revolution by Shane Claibourne (on a sad not Shane’s ministry The Simple Way and their neighbors in Philly lost most everything they posses in a 7 alarm fire this week I know they are coveting our prayers and in need of financial help. May you can help, visit their site for photos, video and a way to help. The Simple Way)
The Dangerous Book for Boys by Conn and Hal Iggulden. Got this for both my son and my daughter (she’s got some of the Boles tomboy in her)
A two different friends of mine told me they are thinking about buying a higher than consumer end video camera to shoot videos like this for the church. We need to be using the video medium in our teaching. Why have I taken so long to get on board with this idea?
Back the book. It looks really good and I want to pick it up. Watch the video. Get inspired and if you have a boy or tomboyish little girl this would be a great way to bond.
Were are having a Professional Bass Fisher coming speak at church and then for a community event we are hosting in May. I have been pretty busy over the last couple of days finishing up the design of the publicity cards we are going to have to pass out and use and invites. Let me know what you think.
We are going to two gatherings on Sunday morning the week before Easter and wanted a fun way to remind our people and get the word out so put together this postcard and had it printed over at Overnight Prints. They did a great job, they look great.
Finally after months of dreaming and wishing and a little hard work I got to order my new Maxtor 300GB External Hard Drive. I got it from B&H Photo & Video for a really great price, about 76 cents a gigabyte. I’m really excited I will be using it to archive old data, backing up key folders and system preferences and keeping a disk image of my complete drive in case something bad were to happen to my Powerbook. Now the guys over at National Community Church in DC got a much bigger drive but I have no jealousy in me I am so excited about my drive.
Strategic Public Relations has written a neat blog post about using Flickr and web sites that
utilize flickr for all kinds of different applications. It’d defiantly a worth wild read.
No one writes blog posts or buying giudes for church plants or small churches. What is a good buy that won’t break your budget? What are good products that work in church settings or for mobile churches? So I am going to write about the products that we bought when we decided to go to two projection screens.
Robbie decided that he wants to go to two video screens during our gatherings. So this week I’ve been researching a few things about sending video from one source to two screens. We purchased an identical set of projector (Tobisha TLP790, 3000 Lumens) and screen that we currently run but we also had to purchase a vga splitter and amplipher. I decided on the2-Port UXGA Monitor Splitter Extender from Cables 2 Go. It had good reviews, its a little cheaper than other name brand products and has the same specs as the name brand products. I am also looking into vga over cat5. I found a tutorial on how to make your own cables, which I done some of that before but I’m not so sure about the soddering part for the vga ends. But this site also gives you info on how to make s-video to cat5 and component to cat5. I’m looking for some already done connectors for each end of the cable so if you know of any shoot me the info.
My friend Phil over at Real Life in Clermont recommended this site Dazian, they sell the material for projection screens if you want to make them yourself. He said that it could save you a good bit.
